Cedar Shingles: Which Way is Up?
I have installed a lot of clapboard siding. But this time, I've been asked to use cedar shingles, which aren't common in my area. On the shingles we've been given, one side is somewhat rougher than the other. Is this significant?
R.V., Md.

Paint and stain manufacturers usually say to install cedar shingles rough side out. But another variable may have more bearing on the job's finished look. You may have noticed that many shingles have a slight natural cup to them. If you put the concave face against the wall, they'll flatten out as they dry. If you install them convex face down, the butt may eventually curl away from the wall.
