How do I match new stained cedar siding to existing stained cedar siding?

I will be "lacing" it in with the existing so the seams do not look odd, but the color thing is were I have trouble. I had planned on using a deck cleaner to clean the existing siding. After that I thought that if I stain the new part (12'X9') and then stain everything, old and new, it might blend in decently. Is this a bad idea? I have not had any luck asking around the big home improvement stores and my local siding companies only install the product and will not do any staining.

Answer:
You are on the right path.....from the way you described it you are using a semi transparent wood stain---deck cleaner is one way to lighten and clean up the existing siding, along with a power washer. Some might say to let the new shingles or siding weather for a while but if you "fool"around with the color(you want to go a bit darker)maybe an extra coat on the new wood--you should get color uniformity. If you are using a solid stain there will be no problem with the color matching after a couple coats...
